Brayden and I have teamed up with Capt Barrett to fish the two man + junior Tito's Redfish Tour event out of Slidell, LA. We've been doing a lot of riding around the past day and a half looking for fish to target on tournament day. We made a few stops to bend rods, and Brayden got in some practice spotting and casting to Redfish. He finally succeeded in spotting, casting, hooking and landing a Redfish start to finish, which is not easy to do. Tomorrow is the main event. The format allows 2 Redfish up to 28" and 1 up to 27" for the main event and then one additional fish for junior; but the junior fish must be caught start to finish by the junior. Job 1 is to win the event, job 2 is to take junior as well. Stay tuned.

"It's all about the Tide!" | Tiberias - 22' | 06/21/18

Don't let the afternoon heat run you off the water! As long as the water is moving you have a chance at catching fish. Time of day has very little to do with our fishery, it has everything to do with tidal movement. I only have a few openings next week and they are in the afternoon. The tides are favorable for catching fish. Give us a call to book your trip now! 910 575 3474 Below are pictures from afternoon trips this week. See ya on the water!

2018 Jolly Mon King Classic Highlights and Recap

The coming of the Jolly Mon King Classic fishing tournament has become as reliable as the yellow butterflies of Fall; they both mean it is King Mackerel time!  This marks the 26th year of the Jolly Mon, which was started back in 1992  by local fisherman Jamie Milliken.  Since its early onset, the event took on a feel of family fishing with, of course, a heavy dose of competitive spirit.  The theme has continued the same through the years as the Jolly Mon has grown to one of the premier King Mackerel fishing events in the country.  The event is hosted annually from the Ocean Isle Fishing Center on Ocean Isle Beach, and it draws fishing teams from across the southeast.  This year the event played host to 242 fishing teams, all competing for over 0,000 in prize money.  But their can only be a select few winners; those who find the right combination of skill and luck to land a single King Mackerel large enough to place on the leader board and take home a prize check.

This year it was Glenn Krofchick and crew of the Lil’ John, based from New Bern, NC who caught the biggest King Mackerel of the event.   They landed a 34.75 pound King on Saturday to take home 1st place overall.  The crew consisted of the boat owner and captain, Glenn Krofchick, Inman Coleman and Hunter Moore.  Glenn reported that the team decided to fish an area of live bottom southwest of Frying Pan Tower in 90’ of water.  They had captured an assortment of live bait to fish with, Menhaden and Bluefish, but one of the bait pumps died and killed all their Menhaden.  Glenn said he was down to his second to last Bluefish, but luckily he ended up with one extra to spare.  The winning King Mackerel ate the live Bluefish and ..”just sat there.  It didn’t run, only made a couple of very short surges……. But I think it finally figured out it was hooked and took off,” reported Glenn.  Glenn went on to explain that after the fish made a long run down sea, it turned and came straight back to the boat on its way offshore.  However, Inman was ready with the gaff and as the big King passed by the boat, he stuck out the 12’ gaff and hit the fish.  The fish was not ready.  It took off under the boat, bending the gaff against the bottom of the boat.  Fortunate for the team, the gaff held and the crew battled the gaffed fish into the boat.  Glenn said it was quite stressful and intense there for a couple of minutes.  But the rest is history.  The Lil John fishing team won over ,000 for that winning fish.

Thanks to the community fishermen and sponsors for their continued support of the Jolly Mon King Classic.  The next King Mackerel fishing tournament is the Got’em On King Classic out of Carolina Beach, July 13-15.

"Jolly Mon UPDATE" | OIFC | 06/16/18

242 teams have entered to compete in the 2018 Jolly Mon King Classic.  Roughly 120 are fishing today.

Yesterday was a fun-filled day as some teams were out on the water participating in the Jr. Jolly Mon while many others were filtering over to the Ocean Isle Fishing Center to register for the Jolly Mon, eat some great food from the Wing & Fish Company, attend the Capt. Meeting and watch Pogy Bobbing.

It is always a cool scene as the OIFC grounds come alive with Jolly Mon participants.  Red Hare Brewing was on-site giving samples of their products as they are new to the area (opened up their Brewery in downtown Shallotte this Spring) and Yellowfin had a 32, 36 and 39 on display at the docks for pariticipants and guests to view.

Pogy Bobbing was a hoot like always, and I've got the pictures, but not this second.  I will post those in coming days.  Here are the results:

15 contestants from 6-15 years old

-11 division- Logan Staley (10) – 31.5 seconds

11-14 division- Cole Evans (12) – 8.8 seconds

15+ division- Hunter Hudson (15) – 4.5 seconds

Stay tuned for reports from the Jolly Mon as teams compete for the money
